Sport horses are a discretionary purchase. When financing is expensive and buyers move carefully, listings tend to sit longer — even when headline inventory looks steady.

Subjective asks vs objective comps
Ads give you a subjective story — claimed scope, headline price, or “inquire.” An objective read needs verified record, comparable listings with price and scope, and a fair range tied to what the horse has actually jumped.

Board
Full training board varies widely by region and barn. Winter circuits and major hubs often run 2–3× home-base rates — usually the largest monthly cost after purchase.
Training & shows
Pro rides, entries, shipping, and coaching stack on top of base board while a horse is in a program or actively campaigning.
Insurance & upkeep
Mortality and major-medical premiums tie to declared value. Farrier and routine vet care accrue monthly — including through the about 8 weeks typical listing stretch in this scan.

Jumpers vs hunters
Jumpers and hunters are priced and marketed differently. Jumper ads usually list scope in meters; hunter ads use feet and inches. We report them separately so the numbers stay honest.

Methodology
How we calculate these numbers
Asking price is what the seller posted, not a final sale price after negotiation. Median is the middle of the market. We only include horses with both a listed dollar price and a scope in the ad.
